Good Schools: The Definition of Education
Education has become a highly debated topic in the United States. There are many people who believe that schooling is not enough to make children succeed. Many parents feel that the public schools do not offer a good education for their children. Some even go so far as to say that the public school system does not teach children morals, values or intelligence. There are even those who feel that teachers are not educating their students. Worse, some feel that public schools are not only ineffective in educating students, but they are also being used as a way of control.
An even better definition of education would be “encouraging and enabling people to learn through an involvement that takes them beyond the classroom.” In other words, educators help people learn by making it fun, by allowing them to explore and grow, by developing open minds and bodies, and most importantly, by developing a sense of respect for others. In fact, respect for others is the core value in schooling. Educators need to set a good example and teach students how to treat others with respect. Teaching a group of students how to respect others begins the first day of class. For example, teachers should not only teach students how to be polite to others, but they should also teach them what it means to be polite to others.
Building a culture of learning and teaching kids how to respect others starts the day they enter school. This includes teachers being themselves, showing respect toward all students and following their example. It also includes the involvement of students in the classroom discussions. Teachers need to take the time to engage their students in meaningful conversation. The more students are involved, the more they will learn and grow.
A good school is also inclusive of people from various cultures and backgrounds. This inclusion is especially important today due to the diversity of people and the resulting social problems that arise due to the existence of various groups. A good education incorporates the cultures of those who are in attendance. Programs such as the Office of Equity and Diversity in Education (O Edison) promote this integration through programs like Equity Action Plan (EAP) for the Schools and Communities and Multicultural Education initiative (MEI). However, good schools are working hard to change and incorporate these programs into their curriculum.
When you look at the definition of education, there is a lot that is included in the educational process. You have to define what education is and then you have to decide on a curriculum and make sure that it is inclusive of students from various cultures and backgrounds. There are different curricula for different age groups. You have to choose one that matches your student’s needs and interests. An inclusive education is also a must for any curriculum that involves any type of learning. Any type of learning that involves creativity, inquiry, and independent learning requires this concept.
Learning that does not incorporate an inclusive education is usually referred to as restricted education. This kind of education restricts all forms of creativity and learning that do not relate to the subject matter of the course. It is a waste of resources because the learner is unable to benefit from the experience of learning. It could also be a hindrance in the professional development of the individual because he/she fails to develop skills that could have been learned from the course.
Good schools teach inclusive education by providing opportunities for learning from all perspectives. It is through this inclusion that a student learns from his/her background and experience of life. The inclusion of diverse points of view helps to broaden the perspective of the individual. It is not just a matter of providing information about one’s own experiences. An inclusive education is one in which all viewpoints are considered during the curriculum development.
The process of inclusive learning starts when the concept of the subject is analyzed to identify the experiences and knowledge of different individuals from different backgrounds. This is when the student realises that all individuals share the same views and therefore form a community. Education should be inclusive in the sense that students are not left out because their experiences are different from others. Good schools provide opportunities for students to learn from all walks of life and from various cultures, so that the society benefits from the knowledge of all.
