In the United States of America we talk a lot about education, yet education has been a rather hard word to define. To some people it means getting a high school diploma or an equivalent. To others it means earning an associate’s degree or an advanced degree. Still others believe that education is not relevant to achieving anything worthwhile in life, or that people who are highly educated have little influence in society.
I believe that if everyone understood how education is important and what it does for the individual, then society would be much better off. Education allows us to reach our full potential in every endeavor. It helps us to get good grades, get good results on tests, and even help us secure a good job in the future. Without education, we cannot succeed in many aspects of our life. And with that being said, everyone should have the chance to obtain the education they need in order to reach their full potential.
How is education important to society? In today’s society there are more children graduating from high school and universities than ever before. This statistic is nothing to take lightly because of the incredible number of bright young minds being put into this world. We also have a massive amount of college students as well. And finally, there are millions of people without any formal education at all. With all these individuals, you can clearly see how education is critical to societal success.
What is education? Is it the school where you went, or the class that you took, or the books that you read, or the certificates that you earned? No, education is the process by which an individual becomes knowledgeable about the world around them.
Can you imagine the state of society if everyone knew only a limited amount of information? Would the world still be as great as it is today? Probably not. Education is one of the cornerstones of modern civilization, and yet most people do not think it is important. Why is that? Simple really, when people have the knowledge needed, they take care of the entire society.
Think of how great the world would be as we know it right now if everyone had only a high school education. How many sick people would still be living with their parents? How many children would not be born into this world because parents did not have the funds necessary to send them to the best schools in the country? Obviously, the world would be a very different place, and civilization as we know it would not be as rich and as advanced. And this is just the beginning.
When you take the time to learn, you have more opportunities in life. You may end up having a job that allows you to not only help your family financially, but you could end up helping the world become a better place in which to live. How is that possible? By earning an education.
You cannot go into a classroom, sit in a chair, and expect for things to happen to you based on what you have learned in a classroom. It just does not work that way. You need to learn the skills that are necessary for you to be successful in a career. That is what education is all about, improving careers. It is important that everyone has the opportunity to do so, because if not, there will be nothing left to live for.
In most developed countries, the educational system itself is often not the best. The schools are often underfunded, and students are not tested enough to keep up with new developments. All around the world, people are falling behind in reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, and that should be a huge concern. With so many people struggling with these skills, why should anyone even bother to go to school?
Fortunately, technology has caught up with education. There are plenty of wonderful resources available for people to use to learn what they need to know. They can take courses online or through a DVD. They can read books on their own or enroll in classes at a local community college, where they will have an instructor to teach them the skills they need. They can even take courses in other countries. These all give them an edge over traditional classrooms, because they are not subject to the same rules as those who are actually teaching the class.
How is education important? It may be something that is never more than a distant dream for many of today’s youngsters. But it’s a reality for countless numbers of people who are willing to take the time to pursue it. So, what are you waiting for?
